抄録: In Japanese conversation, second-person pronouns are seldom used to address one's seniors. On the other hand, quite a few learners of Japanese whose native language is Chinese overuse watashi (I) and anata (You) in conversation with their seniors. Thus, there are considerable differences in the use of personal pronouns between Japanese and Chinese, which this paper explores. It conducts an analysis based on a calculation of the frequency of personal pronouns in the two languages, using radio dramas as data sources of colloquial language. It also considers factors contributing to the difference in frequency. This paper reveals as a result that the frequency is less in the Japanese than in the Chinese while the number of personal pronouns is greater in the former than in the latter. The following six are the factors affecting the difference in frequency between the two languages: 1. the difference in honorific expressions, 2. the difference in expressions about giving and receiving, 3. the difference in usage of adjectives describing emotions, 4. the difference in functions of verbs of perception , 5. the difference in usage of personal pronouns, 6. the difference in possibility of the use of personal pronouns and demonstrative pronouns in pairs.
