抄録: Numerous previous research studies on birth behavior have approached the decline of total fertility rate from women's points of view, since women are the main actors in childbearing and taking care of children. At the center of this discussion is women's difficulty in combining work and childcare because of the inadequate child-care services provided by the public sector. Additionally, the lack of men's personal preferences, such as their desires or intentions, has been left out of the discussion about having children, although men also have an important role to play. This article examines men’s personal preferences to having children, especially focusing on how to choose the timing of having the first child and additional children. In order to achieve this task, the qualitative data was collected through interviews in Denmark with 5 married couples and also 1 subject living in a consensual union. Each couple has at least one child (including one case of being Pregnant). The results reveal different preferences for the first child and for the later children. Men emphasize the desirability of their own social stability before having the first child. They have no notion of having no 1 until finishing their studies, or getting a job. In contrast, with the second and third child, they tend to consider their partner and her career, and it seems that their preference for additional children becomes weaker than that for the first child. The background for these differences is that everyone in Denmark is supposed to be on a course through life based largely on having a career, and because the gender gap still remains in Danish social institutions.
