抄録: This paper examines how everyday social confinement through clothing and related items influences individual’s expressivity. For instance, in 1980s Japan, an issue arose about school uniforms that they seemed to be used to impose rules through dress codes. Consequently, concern began to arise over whether school uniforms deprived students of expressivity. However, as education became commodified and fashionable dressing became widely socially acceptable, school uniforms were recreated as items fashionable enough to attract customers, that is, students and parents. Thus, the concern faded away. However, the question remains whether expressivity can be sustained when confinement exits in any form, specifically in clothing. We chose Aceh, Indonesia, as a case study for two reasons. First within the administrative area of Aceh, everyone must follow the customary laws of Syariat Islam, which shows in part how to cover the body and the kinds of clothing to be worn. Second, in a seemingly contradiction, interest in fashion is increasing in Aceh. We found that the religious confinements are actually not incompatible with sustaining “traditional” expressivity. We argue that expressivity has been rediscovered and connected to fashion after regaining peace from conflict resolution between the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) and the Indonesian government following the 2004 tsunami disaster.
