抄録: According to the rapid shift of birth place from home to hospitals childbirth which used to be seen as a normal event of a woman’s life is now looked upon as a medical event. Also women’s attitudes toward giving birth and starting a family are undergoing a big change. In this article I conducted a questionnaire research in seven hospitals in urban Kahoku area of China, collecting responses from 118 women after birth. I also interviewed ten postpartum women to know their experiences of births in depth. Based on these two methods I illustrate the following three points. 1. In urban areas of China birth in hospitals is highly medicalized. Women experience wide range of medical intervention and cesarean section rate among the researched women was 64.4%. In period following birth many women relied on Chinese herbal medicine to increase the amount of their breast milk. 2. Women think that they should utilize medicine to the utmost in order to have a healthy baby and to have a safe childbirth. Among those women who gave birth by cesarean section 80% of them either chose the method from the outset or changed their mind to have cesarean birth during labor and delivery. 3. Childbirth is looked upon as an important family event and not as a matter for a woman herself. Women rely on medicine and modern technology in order to fulfill the demand of her family members. To conclude the use of medical intervention in childbirth may seem to meet the needs of urban Chinese women but the decision may not have come from their own will. Also too much medical intervention may give women bodily harm than comfort as is seen by the effect of cesarean section after birth.
