抄録: The purpose of this study was to examine the factors required to raise motivation in instances when positive thinking leads to excessive strain and fruitless effort. Factor contributing to excessive strain and fruitless effort were clarified by categorizing the participants’ responses. Furthermore, the level of game anxiety was examined according to differences in participants’ self-valuations of the frequency with which they experienced excessive strain and fruitless effort. Eight categories were subsequently identified as being descriptive of positive thinking, which leads to excessive strain and fruitless effort, and the contents constituting such thoughts became clear. In addition, the results suggested that game anxiety was high in players who experienced excessive strain and fruitless effort. Further, an interview was conducted to learn about the conditions in which excessive strain and fruitless effort would easily occur from positive thinking. Qualitative analysis was conducted on data obtained through the interview using Steps for Coding and Theorization (SCAT). The results implied, for example, that when players considered a game to be special, they did not think it was necessary to apply positive thinking to intentionally raise their motivation just before the game. According to these results obtained with regard to the degree of game anxiety and the conditions favoring excessive strain and fruitless effort, the present study suggests it is necessary for players to learn how to apply positive thinking in guiding themselves toward attaining the optimum level of motivation.
