抄録: This paper shows a phenomenon of spoken English that has a modifier reduplication of lexical items. For example, "I'll make the tuna salad(X), and you make the SALAD-salad(XX)." We propose that the English XX construction, which has a procedural meaning, indicates the hearer to interpret the construction by narrowing its denotation via ad hoc concept construction. Thus we call the XX expression as a form-meaning pair "the English XX construction." The purpose of this paper is to investigate what characteristics the XX construction has and how the XX construction behaves in communication by using a relevance theory. When a speaker communicates with a hearer, she tries to convey what she really wants to say to him, but in fact, she cannot express herself even if she uses any kinds of words or lexical items, and cannot have really appropriate expressions. Hence she uses the XX construction to make him understand what she really wants to convey. The hearer has to infer in pragmatic process the reason why the speaker deliberately use the form of English XX construction instead of the form of single X. This is called a pragmatic inference process. As a result of analyses of five case studies concerning the English XX construction, we propose four significant factors. First, the interpretation of an XX expression by narrowing is a highly context-dependent process. Second, in the case without context, it highly depends on encyclopaedic knowledge. It goes without saying that the interpretation is underspecified, compared with the XX construction with context. Third, the use of the XX construction sometimes has a euphemistic effect on the utterance. Lastly, each English XX construction has certain mental factors. This paper suggests that many concepts and thoughts can be economically conveyed by using the English XX construction that resists lexicalization.
